Atlas Research Employee Receives Navy and Marine Corps Commendation

March 14, 2014

Atlas Research Operations Manager Greg Smallwood, a Marine who recently transitioned from active duty to inactive reserves, has been awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal from the Wounded Warrior Regiment.

Staff Sergeant Smallwood distinguished himself through exceptional leadership and a superior performance of his duties, including the direct care for more than 25 wounded, ill, and injured Marines and their families. He enabled the successful transition of more than 50 wounded, ill, or injured Marines in their transition out of the Marine Corps or back to duty. As the Detachment’s first substance abuse control program coordinator, he established local procedures that led to the successful recovery of several Marines.

The Commendation Medal is a United States military decoration presented since 1943 to Service Members for their sustained acts of heroism or meritorious service. Staff Sergeant Smallwood is recognized for “upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.”

Mr. Smallwood, who served as a Marine from 2005 to 2013, received the recognition March 13 during a special ceremony attended by family members and Atlas employees. The medal was presented by CEO Ryung Suh, MD, a detachment surgeon of the U.S. Army Reserve Consequence Management Unit, and Vice President Deb McKay, a retired captain of the U.S. Navy.

“Atlas Research is a company that honors Veterans and Service Members, and we are proud to recognize Greg for his accomplishments, both as a Marine and as a valued leader within our corporate family,” said Dr. Suh.

The United States Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Regiment provides and enables assistance to wounded, ill, and injured Marines, sailors attached to or in support of Marine units, and their family members to assist them as they return to duty or transition to civilian life.

A Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), Atlas Research is a proud supporter of events honoring Veterans and Service Members.
