Atlas Executive Vice President, Jamie Hart, Co-Authors an Article on Black Women and Fertility

June 23, 2015

Atlas Executive Vice President Jamie Hart, PhD, recently published an article in Psychology of Women Quarterly. Silent and Infertile: An Intersectional Analysis of the Experiences of Socioeconomically Diverse African American Women With Infertility examines the experiences of African American women who cope with infertility.

While past infertility studies have focused mainly on wealthy White couples, this study aimed to look specifically at the challenges that face minority women who have experienced infertility.

The study consisted of 50 interviews conducted with African American women of varied socioeconomic backgrounds, and used an intersectional framework to explore participants’ infertility journeys, including the stigma which surrounds infertility and how infertility shapes a woman’s sense of self.
