February 7, 2015

Atlas Research is pleased to announce the arrival of Michael A. Sabo, MBA, FACHE, as Director of Health Transformation. Mr. Sabo is a health care executive and retired U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) regional network and medical center director with 38 years of leadership experience. As the Director of Health Transformation at Atlas, Mr. Sabo will lead health care improvement, efficiency, and operational excellence efforts.

Prior to joining Atlas, Mr. Sabo served as a health care consultant and team leader for nationwide assessments of VA’s Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) and patient-centered care initiatives. Mr. Sabo previously served as director of the New York/New Jersey Veterans Healthcare Network, which includes five medical centers, thirty-two outpatient clinics, more than 11,000 staff, and service to more than 900,000 Veterans. Mr. Sabo also served as an executive sponsor for the Veterans Health Administration’s (VHA) national Leading Access and Scheduling Initiative (LASI), which addressed critical issues in scheduling and access. He directed the first implementation of ISO 9001 in a Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN), introducing industry best practices that led to greater reliability in sterile processing services; and he spearheaded a network-wide transformation to a “Lean culture” using scientific principles to improve quality and remove waste from the system.

Mr. Sabo is a recognized leader in the national effort to end Veteran homelessness; has promoted new models of care delivery, including the medical home; supported a nationally recognized center of innovation for patient-centered care; and directed the highly regarded emergency response, recovery, and reconstitution of health services at the Manhattan VA Medical Center following Super Storm Sandy.

Mr. Sabo was the recipient of the 2014 American Hospital Association Federal Executive of the Year Award and three Presidential Meritorious Rank Awards. He has served on numerous VA national committees and workgroups and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

“We are thrilled to welcome someone with Mike’s background and understanding of VA as we continue to expand and strengthen an Atlas Team widely recognized for its breadth and depth of VA expertise. Mike’s many years of distinguished public service and dedication to improving the health and wellbeing of the nation’s Veterans make him an ideal addition,” said Atlas Executive Vice President Beth Mahan. “We are fortunate to have him.”
