Designing Products for Patient Education

Challenge

The Office of the Patient Experience (OPE) and Greater Los Angeles Patient Centered Care (PCC) at the Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System wanted to create new consumer products centered on meeting the many needs of a diverse Veteran population: young, old, dealing with disability in various dimensions, family members and caregivers, and staff who provide care for them. These products require the creation of engaging and visual content that must not only communicate important information and resources to a broad range of audiences efficiently and effectively, but must also comply with federal accessibility requirements.

Solution

Atlas Research worked with OPE and PCC to create several products, including a calendar, folders, multiple brochures, banners, and tabletop exhibits. The creative team applied best practices in patient education, including assisting patients (and their families and caregivers) in learning about their health care to improve their own health rather than telling them the best actions to take, and providing information in culturally competent formats to imrpove the communication process. Adult learning principles were also applied. Each product adhered to U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) brand guidance and was compliant with Section 508 regulations.

Result

In total, 18 new products were created and produced. Through these efforts, Atlas helped OPE and PCC to communicate with patients in a clear, attractive, and useful way.
