Studying Health Care Management Education Around the World

Challenge

The Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) International Healthcare Management Education Initiative aimed to improve understanding about international health care management by determining the major avenues for education and learning of health care management professionals in selected countries around the world. To ensure that its specific concerns surrounding health care management were thoroughly investigated, CAHME engaged Atlas Research and the University of Scranton to conduct the study.

Solution

The project reviewed health care management training in 16 countries, and provided country-specific profiles of the supply and demand for health administrators and leaders within these territories. Atlas leveraged its unique access to official sources to engage an expert panel to review and comment on the initial work; plan, suggest, and review survey instruments; comment on findings, and; review the final report. Atlas experts also conducted literature reviews, surveys, and interviews.

Result

The project resulted in a systematic review of the supply and demand for professionally trained health administrators and leaders in 16 countries in the Latin and South American, European, and Asian regions. Each country’s profile included concise information on major educational programming used in each country, an overview of trends and patterns across the various countries, and comprehensive contact information for key institutions and individuals.

Other materials produced for this project included survey results of ongoing and new work of CAHME accredited programs as well as a description of their involvement in international health administration education; an agenda of recommendations for possible next steps building on the research; and ideas for disseminating the project results.
