Atlas Research Co-Hosts Webinar for Caregivers of Veterans Experiencing Hearing Loss

September 30, 2015

Atlas Research, along with Easter Seals Dixon Center and the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, hosted a free webinar entitled Caregiving for a Veteran with Hearing Loss on Thursday September 24, 2015.

Participants learned how to help Caregivers maximize communication with their Veterans. Paula Myers, MD, Chief of the Audiology Section at the James A Haley Veterans' Hospital in Tampa, Fl., led the discussion, describing hearing loss as it relates to Veterans as well as providing valuable resources for Caregivers of Veterans with hearing loss.

Dr. Myers has worked at the Tampa VA hospital for 27 years and has authored/co-authored publications on tinnitus management and on blast injury and auditory dysfunction. She has presented and co-presented nationally on blast injury and auditory dysfunction, patient education, patient-centered care, and tinnitus management.

Over 50 percent of pre-9/11 Veterans and over 40 percent of post-9/11 Veterans experience problems with hearing loss, and for 91 percent of the post-9/11 Veterans, their hearing loss is related to military service. We extend our thanks to Dr. Myers, Dole Fellow Jennifer Mackinday of Indiana, and the VA Caregiver Support Staff for the discussion of this important topic.

The presentation fostered a lively and informative discussion on the webinar chat feature with positive feedback thanking Dr. Myers for her time and expertise. Another participant noted that they, “had no idea that there were so many mobile apps to help with hearing.”

This webinar is the latest in the Easter Seals Dixon Center Military Caregiver Webinar Series.
